The modern polyurethane options are often suited to buying all one colour; they then form the background for the accessories such as the rug, flowers or prints in the room. If you want to create a beautiful arty display on top look for a simpler style that won't compete, if you are not so confident with creating bold displays, select more of a statement piece that can become the talking point, a bolder design will ensure your guests don't think you're boring!
Evenings, however, are another story and that is when the modern coffee table may be better known as a cocktail table. Precisely like any traditional coffee table, a cocktail table is set low to the ground and generally placed in front of a sofa or seating area. However, there are some cocktail tables that feature removable benches and other features compatible with game tables. The difference is subtle, but a cocktail table is not designed specifically for gaming of any kind and tends to be a little more formal. Game tables often have features like built-in boards or places specifically designed to hold chess pieces and similar objects.
Quick Styling Tips: Books are key items, a couple of stacks of coffee table books you love, arranged at one end, or opposite sides. Trays are key to creating a style when there isn't much happening, either contrast the shape of the table (i.e. round on square, or square on round), or go for the same shape, positioned perpendicular or off centre, place a vase with fresh flowers or a candle holder, and throw your remotes in. Pretty boxes also make an easy display; placed on top of a few magazines or stack a couple in differing sizes & colours, they will add an instant display and also form a place where you can hide the remotes.
The shape of the coffee table should play a big part in the type of clock that you choose to go for. Coffee tables come in shapes and sizes and it is important that you get a clock that best suits the shape of the table as well as the material that the table is made of. A small domed shaped clock looks rather nice when placed as a centre piece on a medium sized round coffee table. It's important to get the proportion of the clock right against that of the table. A clock that is too large for a coffee table can just give the impression of something that has been placed there waiting to be moved on to somewhere different. It is not that difficult to find a clock to suit your coffee table, clocks are available in many different styles and price brackets.
